LETTER FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Foundation > Letter from the Board Chair

William P. Schlarb, Chairman
SCPH Foundation Board of Directors

We must always change, renew, rejuvenate ourselves: otherwise we harden.

-- Johann von Goethe
Unique circumstances--the financially disastrous Great Depression and the troubling uncertainties in the aftermath of World War II-- led our founders to create retirement communities and senior services for older adults, where they could contribute to the community and experience fulfillment, dignity and self-worth. Today we face the future eager to meet new challenges and opportunities of our mission in contemporary society. Our resolve is strengthened by the commitment and volunteerism of those who came before.

Over several decades nonprofit organizations throughout our country have faced an array of challenges to their legitimacy. As Lester M. Salamon, director of the Center for Civil Societies Studies at Johns Hopkins, points out – "managers will be constantly challenged to preserve the 'nonprofit world' and the importance of our voluntary institutions. Failure to do so may leave many more of us ever more reliant upon government programs."

SCPH has evolved and now ranks high among the largest not-for-profit elder-care providers in the country. The need of affordable and retirement housing, home care and associated services for an ever-increasing number of seniors poses a challenge to all care-providers. SCPH and its Directors are committed to stand out with provision of high quality services and environments for all in our programs and the communities in which we operate. The Foundation is committed to unfailingly support SCPH in its endeavors. On behalf of the Directors and the Foundation staff, I wish to express my gratitude to everyone who has generously supported our efforts to enrich the lives of our clients and residents. Those who faithfully serve on the SCPH Board of Directors, the Foundation Board of Directors and all who participate throughout our enterprise keep volunteerism alive and well at SCPH.
